What Makes a Great Running Buddy?
Running is a solitary pursuit but sprinkling in quality companionship helps prevent burnout and elevates training by adding variety in the form of new routes, different pacing, and engaging conversations. What makes someone a “quality” running partner? Here’s what I prioritize most:
1. Run a similar (or faster) pace
This one is obvious, but bears mentioning. A drastic pace mismatch isn’t fun for anyone. I prefer running with people who are faster than me. Thankfully my friends don’t pressure me to pick up the pace, but knowing I’m running with someone speedy makes me less likely to take my foot off the gas. I don’t want to slow anyone else down too much, and running with a quicker runner keeps me honest.
2. Ambitious and supportive
I purposely surround myself with people who chase big goals because their enthusiasm and dedication are contagious. A rising tide lifts all boats! I’m excited to cheer them on, and they’re excited to see me succeed as well.
3. Chatty… but not too chatty
I like to talk when I run. Running is my primary social outlet, so my running buddies double as pro bono therapists and listen to me blather about my latest highs and lows. I know I’ve found a good match if I feel I can open up to them, and if they can also dish about what interesting challenges exist in their life. It’s also important to know when to zip it. If we’re 5 hours into a trail adventure, or huffing and puffing up a hill, we don’t need to keep entertaining each other.
4. Dependable
I’m not saying I’m never 3 min late. I am saying that if I am running late, I text my buddy to let them know I’m on my way (and I’m really sorry). I love dependable people, and I strive to be that person. We’re both showing up pretty much ready to go with minimal lollygagging.
5. Willing to accommodate training needs
A great running buddy honors my goals, training plan, current abilities and injury status. I appreciate the people who are willing to do wonky things so that we can run together, like meet at odd times or drop a car at an unconventional location. It can take a staggering amount of mental gymnastics to coordinate a run, but the right person will wade through logistical parameters to make it happen. Staying flexible with each other is the key to a lasting running relationship.
Finding the right fish in the vast sea of runners is a worthwhile pursuit. The runner-to-runner bond is special, and the best way to build a rolodex of quality training partners is to be a quality training partner.
